Because Buddha had gained enlightenment in this lifetime, he was able to escape the endless cycle of birth - death - rebirth (known as samsara) and was able to enter Nirvana. This statue depicts the last moments of the Buddha, lying down before he reached Nirvana and is considered very auspicious by followers of Buddhism as a symbol of attaining Nirvana.
