The Divine Relationship between Yoga, Ayurveda and Astrology

The relationship between sister sciences of Vedic studies Yoga, Ayurveda and Jyotisha, is a fascinating Sun-Moon-Earth experience. All these ancient sciences are bound by a foundational concept of the Five Natural Elements which exist universally, in the celestial world, the earthly world, and within our own bodies. These five elements or “panch mahabhutas” are ether, air, fire, water and earth, and they transition from finite to form. The existence of space gives way to wind, wind blows creating fire, fire burns high and melts, water flows and hardens to become earth.

Study of the divine relationship Ayurveda, Yoga and Vedic Astrology helps cultivate a deeper understanding about the working of the five natural elements. This study also serves a much higher purpose of transcending our human experience towards the Divine, by understanding the relationship and interplay between the Sun, the Moon, the Earth and the Five Natural Elements.

Vedic Shloka in Sanskrit:

Tasmadva etasmadatmana akash sambhutah |

Akasadvayuh | Vayoragnih | Agnerapah |

Adbhyah prithvi | Prithivya osadhayah |

Osadhibhyosnam Annat purusah ||

❖ Translation : From that atman (supreme soul) space came into being ~ from space wind ~ from wind fire ~ from fire water ~ from water earth ~ from earth plants ~ from plants food ~ and from food man came into being.

 Living in Balance ||  Sun ~ Moon ~ Earth

According to the Vedas, or ancient Hindu scriptures dating back to 1000 BC, the universe and life on earth came into existence as a manifestation of these five natural elements. Ayurveda, Jyotisha and Yoga are essentially inter-linked and knowledge of any one field without the other is incomplete and will not yield optimum results for practitioners.

The inter-relationship within the three sciences can be explained further by delving into details of each:

1. Ayurveda : is a comprehensive tool for healing ourselves physically and psychologically by making appropriate changes in diet and lifestyle factors. Ayurveda treats the physical body thru Pranic body. A healthy body and mind is one where all the five elements are in balance and they function in harmony both internally within our bodies and externally as in extended alignment with nature and our environment.

2. Vedic Astrology : teaches us how to heal ourselves by harmonizing ourselves with planetary alignments and energies. Astrology treats the physical body thru Astral body. At cosmic level, Sun represents the vital life energy, Moon represents the nourishing protective energy and Earth represents the nurturing manifesting energy.

3. Yoga : is a tool to train the body and mind to self-observe and become aware of their own nature. Yoga treats both the spiritual and physical bodies through breathing techniques, exercise and meditation. The purpose of yoga is to cultivate awareness and self-regulation, which in turn leads to a higher consciousness in the practitioner.

In nature examples of this interplay between the elemental sciences can be seen abundantly. All plants on earth, especially herbs receive vital life energy from the Sun during the day which is essential for them to come into form. During night, they receive nourishing life energy from the Moon, which is important for them to develop and grow. The five elements, ether, air, fire, earth and water play a crucial role in keeping this eco-system flourishing, protected and well nurtured.

In fact, certain seeds are planted only during certain stages of Sun, as they are believed to generate most potent herbs. Ayurvedic herbs are extracted and medicines prepared from these herbs on specific days, based on phases of the Moon. These medicines then go on to cure the human body of what ails it, healing from both within and from outside ~ as an interplay of Ayurveda, Yoga and Jyotisha, transcending our human existence towards the Divine.
